Re: your tags, yes, krankenwagen is the legit German word for an ambulance. “Krank” = sick, “wagen” = vehicle, I guess. So it really makes far more sense than ambulance.
Some of the words make more sense than others; Naturwissenschaften, for example, literally means “knowledge about nature”, which is a perfectly good way of describing science. Schmetterling is just hilarious, though.
